What example are you leaving our kids?

The other day I took my son to a UNA basketball game. While there we enjoyed the pre game warm up by both teams and my son even got a hug from Una(the mascot not the real thing).Well the game was about to start when the announcer asked everyone to stand for the National anthem. As they started I noticed something peculiar. Four men who were standing around us were being disrespectful to the anthem. Two refused to put their hands over their hearts and the other two refused to remove their caps.I pointed this out to my son and told him that you should always remove your cap and put your hand over your heart when the anthem is played.

Well my son decided he wanted to leave at half time so we got up and left (UNA was losing by a large margin). But on the way home we passed the Suntrust Building on Court St. and low and behold there was Old Glory perched atop the building.Sadly though our country`s flag,a flag that has stood for freedom and liberty through out the world was in tatters.

Folks please think about things like this.If you have a flag that is damaged please take it to a American Legion post or to the Boy Scouts. They will dispose of it properly. In fact the American Legion post in Florence has a flag drop off box just for this. And also if your are in a situation where the anthem is played please offer the appropriate response.Because there are young eyes who are watching what you are doing. What kind of example do you want to leave?

  1. Geddon, thank you for this reminder. Our country may have many faults; but, God blessed us when He allowed us to be born and grow up in America -- and especially in Northwest Alabama.

You deserve a big "Atta boy" for teaching your son to respect our flag and our nation. Thank you.

I am sorry also that the TD banned you; I always enjoyed dialoguing with you. Seems the new management has gone "axe crazy."

God bless, have a wonderful, blessed day,

    Bill Gray
